Sundance Mountain Resort

๐Ÿ“ Provo Canyon (Alpine Loop Road)
Half days close to home

Sundance is the closest lift-served skiing to Provo, at 8841 N. Alpine Loop Road, a couple of miles off the Provo Canyon highway. Its own directions put Provo's airport about 30 minutes away. It has a ski and snowboard school.

Tip: Foundry Grill is the resort's comfort-food restaurant. Check the dining page before you plan around it.
2

Sundance Nordic Center

๐Ÿ“ Provo Canyon (SR-92, past the resort)
Cross-country and snowshoeing

The Nordic Center is about 2 miles up SR-92 from the main resort. It grooms more than 15 km of trails for classic and skate skiing, keeps about 10 km of snowshoe trails, and offers lessons and rental gear. The resort has not posted 2026-27 season dates yet.

Tip: Drive yourself. The resort runs no shuttle to the Nordic Center.
3

Soldier Hollow Nordic Center

๐Ÿ“ Midway, Wasatch Mountain State Park
Olympic Nordic trails and tubing

Soldier Hollow hosted the cross-country skiing and biathlon events at the 2002 Winter Olympics and keeps groomed trails open to the public. It also runs a tubing hill with a magic carpet lift, and its operator says opening depends on snow.

Tip: Pair a Nordic morning with lunch in Midway or Heber.
4

Park City Mountain

๐Ÿ“ Park City
A big day on a big mountain

From Utah County, drive US-189 up Provo Canyon to Heber, then north to Park City, which keeps you out of the Salt Lake valley. Park City Mountain allows snowboards and has lessons and rentals for both.

Tip: Check the resort's seasonal page for the 2026-27 opening date.
5

Deer Valley Resort

๐Ÿ“ Park City
A groomed, quieter day

Deer Valley is on the other side of Park City from Park City Mountain, on Deer Valley Drive South. The resort says it is ski-only, so snowboarders should pick another mountain.

Tip: Same Provo Canyon route as Park City Mountain.
6

Brighton Resort

๐Ÿ“ Big Cottonwood Canyon
Night riding

Brighton sits at the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon on Brighton Loop Road. It is open to all riders and lists night riding on lit runs, including Sunday nights this season. From Provo you drive north through the valley to the canyon mouth.

Tip: Check UDOT road conditions before driving up in a storm.
7

Solitude Mountain Resort

๐Ÿ“ Big Cottonwood Canyon
A second Big Cottonwood option

Solitude is in Big Cottonwood Canyon, below Brighton, with its own village and lodging. The resort lists an opening day party on November 20, conditions permitting.

Tip: Winter parking rules are on the resort's Getting Here page. Read them before a weekend trip.
8

Snowbird

๐Ÿ“ Little Cottonwood Canyon
Aerial tram and big terrain

Snowbird is in Little Cottonwood Canyon and runs an Aerial Tram to the top of Hidden Peak. It lists terrain for both skiers and snowboarders.

Tip: Check UDOT road conditions for Little Cottonwood before you leave Utah County.
9

Alta Ski Area

๐Ÿ“ Little Cottonwood Canyon
Skiers who want a mountain without snowboards

Alta is in Little Cottonwood Canyon, on the same road as Snowbird. Its own policy page says snowboarding is not allowed.

Tip: Same canyon road as Snowbird, so check the same UDOT conditions.
๐Ÿ“
Local note: Storms and canyon conditions can add a lot of time to any drive up Provo Canyon or into the Cottonwood canyons. Check UDOT road conditions before you leave.

How to pick the right one

Sundance is the pick for a half day or a weeknight, because it is up Provo Canyon and does not need a trip through Salt Lake County. Sundance lists Friday, December 4, 2026 as opening day for the 2026-27 season, and the resort is adding the Electric Horseman Express, a high-speed quad from the Wildwood base to Bearclaw Summit. Opening depends on snow, so check the resort's page before you drive up.

For a bigger mountain, the choice is which canyon. Park City Mountain and Deer Valley are reached by driving US-189 up Provo Canyon to Heber and then north, so you skip the Salt Lake valley. Brighton and Solitude in Big Cottonwood Canyon and Snowbird and Alta in Little Cottonwood mean driving north through the valley first.

Two practical notes. Check UDOT road conditions before any canyon drive in a storm. And Alta and Deer Valley do not allow snowboards.
