BYU plays the last season opener of Jennifer Rockwood's 31 years on Saturday, Santaquin closes Orchard Days with a rodeo and two nights of fireworks, and Utah Lake went under a lake-wide algae warning on Monday

Plus Hercules on a screen in Springville on Friday, a free Monday concert at the American Fork amphitheater, a Brooklyn slice shop in Vineyard that gives kids a pizza for reading three books, and the county's coolest swimming water sitting at eight thousand feet above Payson.

Good morning, Happy Valley.

The city celebrations that have owned the last five weekends run out on Saturday, and what replaces them is quieter and easier to get to. Sports come back to Provo on Saturday night for the first time since spring. Santaquin and Salem finish their runs the same evening. The water news is worse than it was on Monday, so if your weekend plan involved a lake, read the second item before you load the car.

โญ The Big One

Saturday is the last season opener of Jennifer Rockwood's 31 years at BYU Pick of the week

Saturday is the last season opener of Jennifer Rockwood's 31 years at BYU

BYU women's soccer opens the 2026 season Saturday night against Idaho State at South Field, and it is the first home game of the last season Jennifer Rockwood will ever coach. She announced in June that she retires in December. She is the only head coach the program has had, going back to when it was a club team she talked the school into taking seriously. The numbers underneath that are hard to hold in your head. More than 470 wins across 31 NCAA seasons, which puts her in the top ten winningest coaches in Division I history and makes her the winningest active female head coach in the country. Twenty-six NCAA tournament appearances. A run to the national championship game in 2021 and a College Cup semifinal in 2023. BYU has planned tributes across the home schedule this fall, and this is the first one. Kickoff is 8pm, which is BYU getting the game off the hottest part of a South Field afternoon. Tickets are required for anyone two and up in the reserved sections and six and up in general admission, and single-game tickets are on sale through BYU. The tougher tests come later, with UCLA on the road on the 12th and USC into South Field on the 22nd, so Saturday is the cheap night to watch the last first game.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Sat, Aug 8 ยท 8pm kickoff
๐Ÿ“Address: South Field, BYU campus, Provo ยท Central Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: Ticketed through BYU ยท free for kids under two in reserved seating and under six in general admission
โฐTiming: South Field is a small stadium and general admission is most of it, so the seats worth having go early even on a night nobody expects to sell. Get there at 7:30 and sit on the west side, where the sun is already behind you.
Our take
Thirty-one years is longer than most of the people in that stadium have been alive, and the woman who built the whole thing walks off the field in December. Saturday is a nothing game against Idaho State on paper. It is also the last time BYU starts a season with her standing on that touchline, and a ticket to it costs less than a movie.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: Wildfire smoke has been sitting over the state all week, which matters more for the players than for you, but an 8pm start in August can move if the air gets bad enough.

๐Ÿ“ฐ Around the Valley

Utah Lake went under a lake-wide algae warning on Monday

The Utah County Health Department issued a lake-wide Harmful Algal Bloom warning advisory for Utah Lake on August 3, which replaces the patchwork of individual marina and beach advisories the lake had been collecting through July. Warnings are also posted at Salem Pond South Arm, Salem Pond Knoll Beach, and the lower Jordan River. A warning is the middle of the three advisory levels the state uses, and it means the cyanobacteria counts came back high enough that contact with the water carries real risk. Skin, eye, nose and throat irritation are the mild end. Swallowing it can mean vomiting, liver or kidney trouble, and neurological symptoms, and dogs are more vulnerable than people because they drink while they swim.

Smoke from fires elsewhere in the state has been sitting on the valley all week

Fires burning in Millard, Sanpete, Cache and Box Elder counties have pushed enough smoke north and east to haze the whole Wasatch Front since the weekend, and ash has been documented falling on cars as close as Gunnison. The Widemouth 2 Fire near Fillmore is the one that grew fastest. Fire officials are describing August's conditions statewide as catastrophic, which is the word they use when fuels are dry enough that a new start becomes a large fire in hours rather than days. The smoke itself is fine particulate matter, and the guidance is the usual one that gets ignored every year: cut back on outdoor exertion when it is thick, and take it seriously if you are old, small, asthmatic, or pregnant.

๐Ÿค  Santaquin closes Orchard Days with a rodeo Saturday and fireworks two nights running

Orchard Days has been going since the first of the month and it all lands on Saturday. The Grand Parade runs Main Street and 100 West from nine in the morning, free, with food trucks and craft vendors set up at Centennial Park from 9:30 until two. Then the park turns over for rodeo night: gates at five, food trucks from five to ten, a pre-show set from Fire Hawk between six and 7:30, the RMPRA rodeo at eight, and fireworks at 10:30. Santaquin also shoots fireworks on Friday night, so the last weekend gets two of them.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Sat, Aug 8 ยท parade 9am, rodeo gates 5pm, rodeo 8pm, fireworks 10:30pm
๐Ÿ“Address: Centennial Park, 300 W 100 S, Santaquin ยท ~25 min south of Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: Free parade and vendors ยท rodeo ticketed through Santaquin City
โฐTiming: The gap between the parade ending at two and the gates opening at five is the trap. Locals go home, eat, and come back at five for the food trucks, because the rodeo parking fills long before the eight o'clock start.
Our take
An RMPRA card rodeo with a live band in front of it and fireworks behind it is a lot of evening for a town of 15,000, and Santaquin runs it at the far south end where most of the county never bothers to drive. The 10:30 fireworks are the real argument. Nights down there in August do not cool off until well after dark, and standing in a park at half past ten is when it finally feels like summer instead of a warning.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: Fire Hawk plays before the rodeo, not after it, so showing up at eight means you missed the band and paid for the seat.

๐ŸŽฌ Springville puts Hercules on a screen in the park on Friday, and none of it costs anything

The McWane Amphitheater at Springville's Arts Park runs a free movie night on Friday with Hercules. Gates open at seven, the movie starts at nine when it is properly dark, and seating is general admission on whatever blanket or folding chair you carry in. Earlier the same evening, Art City Sidewalk Sessions puts buskers out on Festival Street from 6:30 to eight, also free with tips encouraged, which makes the two of them a single Friday if you time the walk.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Fri, Aug 7 ยท buskers 6:30pm, movie gates 7pm, film at 9pm
๐Ÿ“Address: McWane Amphitheater at Arts Park, 700 S 1300 E, Springville ยท ~12 min south of Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: Free
โฐTiming: Two hours between gates and the first frame is not a mistake, it is the whole design. Come at seven, put the blanket down, walk to the buskers on Festival Street, and be back before the light goes.
Our take
Nine o'clock is late for a movie a five-year-old is supposed to sit through, and that is exactly why this one works better than the afternoon versions. The grass has cooled off, the kids have already run themselves out, and a 1997 Disney musical is the correct amount of plot for a Friday nobody has energy left for.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: The amphitheater has no shade structure and no seating of its own, so a chair with a back on it is the difference between staying to the credits and leaving at the halfway mark.

๐ŸŽถ The American Fork amphitheater has two Monday concerts to go

The Harrington Center runs Concerts in the Park at the American Fork Amphitheater on Monday evenings through August 17, which leaves the 10th and the 17th. Food trucks are serving from 6:30 and the music starts at seven. Admission is free, there is no ticket to buy and no seat to reserve, and the amphitheater's built-in seating means you do not have to carry anything in unless you want to.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Mon, Aug 10 ยท food trucks 6:30pm, music 7pm
๐Ÿ“Address: American Fork Amphitheater, American Fork ยท ~20 min north of Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: Free
โฐTiming: Half an hour of food trucks before the downbeat is enough to eat properly but not enough to wait through a line that forms at 6:45. Be there at 6:30 or plan on eating during the first set.
Our take
Monday nights are the ones nobody plans anything for, which is how a free concert with dinner attached survives summer after summer without anyone from the south end hearing about it. Two of these left and then the amphitheater goes quiet until next June.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: The seating fills from the middle out, so arriving at 6:55 means the far ends, which is where the sound is worst.

๐ŸŽป Pleasant Grove's Arts in the Park runs Tuesday night on Old Main

Pleasant Grove runs a free Arts in the Park performance at 7:30 on Tuesday the 11th at 100 South Main, in the small downtown park rather than out at one of the big sports complexes. It is an outdoor stage, general seating on the grass, and no admission. The whole thing runs about an hour and a half, which is short enough that a school-night audience actually makes it to the end.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Tue, Aug 11 ยท 7:30pm
๐Ÿ“Address: 100 South Main, Pleasant Grove ยท ~15 min north of Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: Free
โฐTiming: Parking downtown is the good kind of problem. Leave the car a block off Main on the residential side and walk in rather than circling the park itself.
Our take
Pleasant Grove kept one of the few blocks in this county that still reads like a real downtown, and an outdoor stage on it beats anything the strip malls out on State can offer on a Tuesday. Bring a blanket, because the grass is the seating.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: A 7:30 start in the second week of August means the last twenty minutes happen in the dark, and the park lighting is thin at the edges.

๐ŸŸ๏ธ The Scoreboard

The coaches put BYU at 15 before a snap has been played

The preseason US LBM Coaches Top 25 came out Tuesday and BYU sits at No. 15, the second straight year the Cougars have opened a season inside that poll. That follows a 2025 that finished 12-2 overall and 8-1 in Big 12 regular-season play, with a trip to the conference championship game and a Pop-Tarts Bowl win at the end of it. Fall camp is running now and the opener is a month out.

Five unanswered past Portland, and Denver away on Saturday

The Royals beat the Portland Thorns 5-1 at America First Field on Sunday, scoring five unanswered after going behind, which is not a scoreline this club has put on anybody before. It moved them back into the top three in the NWSL table. They are on the road Saturday against the expansion side in Denver, then back at home the following Friday.

Fini Pizza, Vineyard Worth it

Fini Pizza, Vineyard

Sean Feeney spent sixteen years in New York finance and then opened Lilia in Williamsburg, and the pizza shop he built off the back of it now has its first location outside the New York area sitting in Utah City in Vineyard. The Sicilian is the one to order: thick crust, sweet crushed tomato, chili oil, garlic breadcrumbs, parmigiano and pepperoni, with more heat than a Utah menu usually admits to. The white pie is the other direction, New York crust with fresh mozzarella, fontina, olive oil and lemon zest. Doors are open noon to ten every day of the week.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Daily, noon to 10pm
๐Ÿ“Address: 875 N Main St, Vineyard ยท ~10 min north of Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: $
โฐTiming: Slices are cut all day and a whole pie takes as long as a whole pie takes, so the fast version of this is walking in at two, taking a slice outside, and letting the kids run the court while you eat.
Our take
The thing that makes the drive worth it is not the crust, good as it is. It is that any kid under 17 who reads three books gets a free pizza for the whole family, and the basketball court out front is open to anybody at any hour with no sign-up and no fee. Firefighters, police and teachers take 25 percent off year round. That is a Brooklyn slice shop behaving like a Utah County ward building, and it is disarming.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: Utah City is still a construction site around the edges, so the approach off Main looks wrong right up until you are parked.

The only swimmable water in the county right now is 8,000 feet above Payson Worth it

The only swimmable water in the county right now is 8,000 feet above Payson

Payson Lakes sits at 7,985 feet on the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway, about forty-five minutes up from Payson, and the day-use area on Big East Lake has a small swim beach, picnic tables and flush toilets. There is a day-use fee at the gate. Three lakes make up the area, McClelland, Box and Big East, and the campground alongside them runs through October 11. The algal warnings issued Monday cover Utah Lake, both Salem Pond beaches and the lower Jordan River. They do not reach up here.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Day-use area open now ยท campground through Oct 11
๐Ÿ“Address: Payson Lakes, up the Nebo Loop from Payson ยท ~45 min south and up from Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: Day-use fee at the gate
โฐTiming: The Nebo Loop is 37 miles of two-lane through high meadow and the day-use lot is small, so a Saturday arrival after eleven means parking on the shoulder and walking in. Weekday mornings you will have the beach.
Our take
Everything down on the valley floor is either posted with a health warning or hazed over with smoke this week, and the answer to both is elevation. Eight thousand feet buys about fifteen degrees off the thermometer and cleaner air than anything at lake level. The water is cold enough to hurt for the first thirty seconds, which by Saturday afternoon in August is the entire point.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: There is no cell service for most of the loop, so anyone meeting you up there needs the plan settled before Payson.

UTA is putting an on-demand ride service into nine north county cities on the 17th

UTA On Demand launches in northwest Utah County on Monday, August 17, which UTA calls Fall Change Day. It is curb-to-curb microtransit, the kind you hail from an app and share with whoever else is going your direction, and the zone covers portions of Eagle Mountain, Saratoga Springs, Lehi, American Fork, Pleasant Grove, Lindon, Highland, Cedar Hills and Alpine. The fare is $2.50, or a dollar for qualified reduced-fare riders, and it includes transfers to bus, TRAX and FrontRunner within two hours. The point of it is the first and last mile, the gap between a house in Eagle Mountain and a FrontRunner platform in Lehi that no fixed bus route has ever been able to close.

The 2100 North freeway connector in Lehi is about two years from opening

UDOT is building a freeway-to-freeway connection between I-15 and Mountain View Corridor at 2100 North in Lehi, roughly three miles of new road at a cost approaching $700 million. It is the single largest piece of a $1.4 billion transportation program across the northwest corner of the county. The projections behind it are the part worth sitting with: about 72,000 vehicles a day by 2028, and as many as 120,000 by 2050, on a road that does not exist yet. County officials point out that no right of way had to be bought for it, because the corridor was preserved decades ago by people planning for a county that had not arrived.

The median house here costs over five times the median household income

The Provo-Orem-Lehi metro carries a median household income around $101,014 against a median home price of roughly $572,450 as of mid-2026. At mortgage rates near 6.55 percent, the math does not close for most of the people who live here, and one analysis put the rate that would be needed at 2.3 percent, a pandemic-era number nobody expects to see again. Twenty-seven percent of Utahns between 18 and 34 are living with their parents, against about a third nationally. The state's own projections have Utah County roughly doubling to 1.5 million people between now and 2065, which is the pressure underneath the price.
