The Osmonds' 20,000-seat canyon amphitheater inches toward reality
The proposed Vesper Amphitheater, a roughly 100-acre year-round venue the Osmond family unveiled in May at the mouth of Provo Canyon, is back in the news as the plan works through the approvals and land deals it still needs. The pitch is big: a stage seating up to 20,000, plus a hotel, a parking structure, and a retail-and-dining strip, with the developers also promising to restore around 110 acres, cut 20 miles of trails, and set aside more than 50 acres for conservation. To pull it off they'd buy about 75 acres of the canyon-mouth site from Provo. It's a swing at putting Utah County on the national touring map, and it's far from settled.
A dry, storm-prone stretch keeps the valley on watch into the weekend
Utah's had a rough weather run, and the state went under an emergency declaration this week after fire and flooding hit several counties, with much of Utah placed under a flood watch as monsoon storms rolled through. Locally it cuts two ways: the foothills and canyons are dry enough to keep fireworks and open flame restricted, and the same storms that skip the valley floor can dump fast, dangerous water in the canyons. Add a stretch of extreme heat and the short version is simple: check conditions before a canyon hike, and don't count on a dry trail just because your driveway is.

Orem's Sunset Farmers Market fills City Center Park on Wednesday evenings, 5 to 9pm, and it's one of the biggest weeknight markets in the valley by vendor count, with something like 200 local stands on a good night. This week it doubles as the kickoff to World Folkfest, so expect the international festival's food and energy layered on top of the produce.
Our take
Two hundred vendors on a summer evening is a real market, not a handful of tents. Orem's runs into the night, which turns picking up peaches and bread into an actual outing. Taco Culture opened this spring on State Street in American Fork, a street-taco counter from Alonso Castaneda, who left a career in restaurant finance to go all-in on tacos. The al pastor is the move, shaved off the vertical spit the way it's meant to be, with carne asada close behind.

American Fork's State Street is wall-to-wall drive-thrus, and a real al pastor trompo turning in the window is a reason to pull over. The guy behind it walked away from restaurant finance to run the counter himself, and it shows in the details. Cheap, fast, and a cut above nearly everything around it. Order more than you think you need.⚠️ Heads up: It's a small taco counter with a tight menu, not a sit-down Mexican restaurant, so go for the tacos and don't expect a big combo-plate spread.

The llamas of the Spanish Fork Krishna temple
Off State Street in Spanish Fork sits a full Hare Krishna temple, white domes and all, with an animal park out back. There are llamas, peacocks, cows, parrots, and a koi pond, and here's the part locals forget: the temple rents the llamas out, to hikers who want a pack animal, to birthday parties, to whoever asks. It's open daily, free to walk, and it's the same place that throws the giant Festival of Colors every spring.
Our take
Most people in the valley have driven past it a hundred times and never turned in. That's the shame of it. A hilltop Krishna temple with peacocks on the lawn and llamas you can rent by the day is exactly the thing you forward to someone who thinks they've seen everything down south. Bring apples or carrots; the llamas are shameless about it.⚠️ Heads up: It's an active house of worship, not a petting zoo, so keep it respectful inside the temple and save the animal-park energy for out back.

A Provo company says it found a trove of critical minerals in the Lake Mountains
Ionic Mineral Technologies, a Provo-based company, announced it uncovered 19 critical and rare-earth minerals in a clay deposit it's calling Silicon Ridge, out in Utah County's Lake Mountains west of Utah Lake. The list includes gallium, germanium, and scandium, the exact materials China has moved to restrict, which is why the discovery drew a visit last week from the U.S. Trade Representative and a line of state and federal lawmakers. The company runs a demonstration plant in Provo and is studying whether the deposit can be mined at scale.
The US-189 widening keeps chewing through Provo Canyon all summer
The long project to widen US-189 through Provo Canyon to two lanes in each direction is in full swing, with crews carving into the hillside for the future northbound lanes. Later this year traffic shifts onto the new lanes so work can start on the other side. The $105 million job isn't set to wrap until late 2027, so plan on canyon delays through every summer weekend between now and then.
Springville's new I-15 interchange is open for business
UDOT opened a new I-15 interchange in Springville earlier this month, adding a fresh freeway access point for one of the fastest-growing stretches of the south valley. New interchanges are how the county tries to keep up with the rooftops filling in around Springville and Spanish Fork, pulling traffic off the older, clogged exits. It's a small thing that adds up for anyone who commutes through the south end.
